Custom Grey Conical Cable Sealing Case — EPDM Dust Protection for Cable Entries

A conical cable sealing case is a tapered rubber boot that closes the point where a cable enters a panel, enclosure or connector. The tapered body squeezes against the sheath as the cable passes through, so one part seals a range of cable diameters and keeps dust and debris out of the housing behind it.

This case is molded in EPDM rubber and supplied for M12 threaded entries, covering cables from 4 mm to 7 mm in diameter. It weighs 3 g, comes in grey or black, and is a stock item — sample quantities ship without a tooling cycle, in retail or wholesale packing.

How to Fit the Case

  1. Thread the cable first. Pass the wire through the lower opening of the case before terminating it, so the boot ends up around the cable rather than needing to be split.
  2. Seat the case into the entry. Screw the case into the M12 entry until it seats against the panel.
  3. Tighten the sheath around the cable. As the tapered body compresses, it grips the cable sheath and closes the gap that dust would otherwise travel through.
  4. Check the pull. A correctly fitted case resists a light tug on the cable — that resistance is the seal doing the retention work.

The reusable construction means the same case can be cleaned and refitted if the cable is later replaced with one of a similar diameter.

Why EPDM for a Cable Entry

EPDM is a synthetic rubber with high elasticity and good recovery, which is what makes it useful in a compression seal: the material has to keep pushing back against the cable for years, not just hold a shape once.

The grade used here is chosen for outdoor and industrial cable entries, where the dominant stresses are weather, water and ozone rather than extremes of heat. The working range of roughly −40 °C to 125 °C covers the vast majority of panel and enclosure installations.

Where This Case Fits — and Where It Doesn't

It is the right part when:

  • a cable enters a panel, junction box or enclosure through an M12 threaded entry;
  • the cable outer diameter falls between 4 mm and 7 mm;
  • the installation is exposed to weather, dust or washdown, and the entry is the weak point;
  • the cable may need to be replaced later, so a reusable boot beats a potted seal.

It is the wrong part when:

  • the cable is outside the 4–7 mm range — a plain conical boot will either not grip or not seat, and a custom mould is the honest answer;
  • the requirement is a pressure-tight or IP-rated barrier to a specific standard, which needs a tested gland rather than a dust cover;
  • the environment runs continuously above roughly 125 °C, where EPDM ages faster than silicone;
  • the cable is already terminated and cannot be re-threaded.
